ADAM HELMS
UNDER WESTERN EYES

Kathryn Brennan Gallery is pleased to present Adam Helms’ Under Western Eyes an exhibition of new charcoal drawings on paper.  Taking Joseph Conrad’s 1911 novel as a point of departure, this body of work references a multifaceted set of images, histories and ideas presented as though viewed from a singular perspective.  Culling images representative of contemporary and historical iconography, portraits and symbols from diverging sources, Helms re-contextualizes these images, serializing and presenting them as artifacts of an as of yet, undefined present.  Individually, the charcoal drawings evoke the ephemeral while presenting stark, sublime images that are balanced between light and dark, a sense of the beautiful and the grotesque.  As a whole, the exhibition continues Helms’ examination of images and the ways in which representations can be appropriated creating varying narratives.

Opening reception Saturday November 21, 6 to 9 PM
