Brennan & Griffin is pleased to present Rising from the ashes of your mind, an exhibition of new works by Los Angeles-based artist Kirsten Stoltmann.  For the exhibition, Stoltmann turns the tables on metaphors, empowerment posters, and New Age language with collages, photography, video and sculpture that examine themes of empowerment with those of confinement.

In works such as Post-Nothing Stoltmann presents herself both as a victim and survivor. In this video piece, the artist is barraged with various weapons while jogging through a suburban Los Angeles neighborhood, Stoltmann's video points to the contradictory nature of such a place's supposed spirit of community and inherent isolationism with wry and self-deprecating wit.   In Excalibur and This Pain Runs Deep Stoltmann uses King Arthur lore and inserts herself into the narrative presenting the artist as king.  Both works challenge this role of power with undercurrents of apathy.  Other works draw on a variety of themes from pop culture and self-help "lingo" to further blur the notions of triumph and defeat and fall somewhere in-between.

Kirsten Stoltmann received her MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago.  She has had Solo Exhibitions at Cottage Home and Sister, Los Angeles, Guild & Greyshkul and Wallspace, New York, The Suburban and Donald Young Gallery, Chicago, IL.  Stoltmann has also exhibited recently in Group Exhibitions at the Saatchi Gallery, London, The Center For Photography, Stockholm, Honor Fraser and Overduin and Kite, Los Angeles, and Western Bridge, Seattle, among others.
